Object of the project "St. Napa - Rethymno, fully accessible Cities" is the development of infrastructure and general accessibility conditions for people with disabilities in places and services.
The proposed actions aimed at improving the overall accessibility , to improve the attractiveness and competitiveness of the tourism product of Municipalities and hence economic growth of cities, in the direction of both attracting a crowded target group ( people with disabilities ) which has not yet been reached , and on the other the simultaneous improvement of daily living conditions of their citizens with disabilities in the context of sustainable development if the new services is the outside of the visitors will enjoy and people with disabilities.
The implementation of the project will have both direct effects for the benefit of people with disabilities and those populations are the same as those needs (elderly ) , since they will be able to visit with both security service areas , and cultural sites and also indirectly results , as the tourism of these groups can be a springboard for broader awareness of the general population , through frequent contact and familiarity , and involvement in addressing the problems.
The objectives of the project are summarized as follows :
1. Prevention of social exclusion of people with disabilities: Ensuring accessibility can contribute substantially to the development of self-esteem , improve communication, ensuring peaceful coexistence , mutual and fruitful absorption of different civilizations and enhance the quality of life of people with disability , but also of the whole.
2. Promotion of Cultural Heritage : The implementation of the Act will be an important means of promotion of the archaeological sites of the two cities in the big group of tourists with disabilities , which due to lack of adequate infrastructure , it is very hard to approximate . The improvement of existing infrastructure and the operation site, will help to attract this group of visitors and will contribute indirectly to raise awareness of the culture of cities.
3. Tourism Development : Creating accessible cultural sites will help increase visitors, people with disabilities make up a special group of tourists who choose the destinations you visit specific criteria. Attracting a targeted audience to cultural sites , such as people with disabilities, will contribute to the development of two islands , and the further utilization of cultural sites will create new jobs. Studies have shown that the " accessible" tourism can contribute to increased employment in the tourism sector .
4. Digital Convergence: A key objective of the Act is the universal accessibility to places of cultural interest. Accessibility can be achieved enormously by taking advantage of an accessible website , where visitors will be able in principle to gather information on the area , region, get information about the nearest tourist destinations and find suitable places of residence.
The implementation of the project will contribute to the accessibility that will allow people with disabilities to independently , safely and comfortably use the infrastructure services ( conventional and electronic ) and goods available in the two cities . At the same time , the implementation of the Act will result in an increase of visitors in both areas, and people with disabilities are a special group of tourists who choose the destinations you visit specific criteria. Access to important places of cultural interest, with the aim of attracting new tourists, apply the principles of ' Accessible Tourism ' or ' Tourism for All' . Finally , the idea of accessible spaces and services for people with disabilities, is pioneering data of both countries, as it has ever implemented such a plan. The Act will be an essential step towards achieving an accessible society as it will allow universal access to places and services in St. Napa and Rethymno.
