Description of Project:

The project involves a study that relies on the collection and use of appropriate primary and secondary data on the structural changes needed for effective restructuring and modernization of local government (municipalities) in the Republic of Cyprus, targeted towards sustainable development of independent resources and the upgrading of the everyday services with new functions and quality of life for citizens.


The project aims at identifying the weaknesses of the current system of local governance of Cyprus, which inhibit the ability to meet the modern requirements for effective functioning towards the people in the most direct and efficient way. Also, the objective is to indicate the necessary institutional changes to enable local government to cover its current weakness. The proposed design of restructuring local government should ensure the improvement and modernization of its functionality, as well as the desired functional autonomy linked to its economic independence.
